About Multi-Purpose Cleaners

With so many cleaning products in the market, the Multi-Purpose Cleaner certainly sounds like a gift from heaven. The days of having multiple cleaners for every surface are finally gone! Right?

Well… not so much. Certainly, while the multi-purpose cleaner is an extremely versatile product, there are some limits to what it can do. Nevertheless, multi-purpose cleaners are a useful staple that every household, office, or kitchen should keep on hand.

What is a Multi-Purpose Cleaner?

Knowing the best use cases for your cleaners is the first step to getting the best results from your product.

Multi-purpose cleaners, by definition, are simply cleaners created to remove dirt, stains, and grease from various surfaces. As to which surfaces – well that depends on the formulation itself. Certain bathroom cleaners might not be suitable for use with marble or stone, due to the acid content that can etch into such materials. Kitchen cleaners may be formulated with high pH in order to degrease stoves but may attack surfaces and even the skin. Fatty alcohol ethoxylates, a type of detergent commonly derived from petroleum and found in most household cleaners, have also been found to cause stress-induced plastic cracking, making them less than ideal for use around the home. Whether it's for household cleaning, kitchen cleaning, or restaurant cleaning, make sure to read the labels to figure out which multi-purpose cleaner best meets your cleaning needs.

Here at Peridot, we offer our Multi-Purpose Surface Cleaner, which takes into account the wide variety of surfaces around the home. Using a mildly alkaline pH, it works against kitchen grease, is safe in contact with skin, and can even be used in the bathroom to tackle greasy soap scum. In formulating our product, we researched greatly into how we could reduce surface tension, in order to penetrate deep into soil dirt and remove them without the use of harsh chemicals. At the same time, we avoided petrochemical products, instead opting for plant-derived ingredients to achieve a truly green solution that pack a huge punch.

How do I use my Multi-Purpose Cleaner?

Not all multi-purpose cleaners are skin-safe and some can come in fairly high concentrations, so before you start, make sure to wear some rubber gloves to stay safe. Have on hand some cleaning cloths or a mop, and you’re all ready to get started! For some of the more concentrated cleaners, you might need to dilute them before use.

As Peridot's Multi-Purpose Surface Cleaner is skin-safe with a mildly alkaline pH similar to soap (pH 10), you do not need to put on gloves before use, which makes cleaning up easier and faster. Simply spray directly onto dirt and wipe away with a clean paper towel or cloth.

Limitations of Multi-Purpose Cleaners

Although Multi-Purpose Cleaners are a super versatile tool in your cleaning toolbox, they do have drawbacks depending on the situation at hand.

  • Heavy degreasing, such as cleaning ovens or removing grease/lubricant from machinery, require a stronger formulation that contains solvents or high pH.

  • Adhesive tape residue left on walls or glass require solvents, such as alcohol, to be cleanly removed.

  • Multi-Purpose Cleaners are not designed to be disinfectants, and may not contain ingredients that are effective at reducing the amount of harmful microorganisms. A dedicated, lab-tested disinfectant will give you and your loved ones a greater peace of mind.
