Certain bathroom cleaners might not be suitable for use with marble or stone, due to the acid content that can etch into such materials. Kitchen cleaners may be formulated with high pH in order to degrease stoves but may attack surfaces and even the skin. Fatty alcohol ethoxylates, a type of detergent commonly derived from petroleum and found in most household cleaners, have also been found to cause stress-induced plastic cracking, making them less than ideal for use around the home.
